Case Study

Gestamp Tallent is a factory site in Cannock. In 2018, they announced plans to demolish and transform the old works to make way for development. Therefore, as a regulatory part of any planned demolition work, the site would require a demolition survey.

In December 2020, we were appointed to carry out a demolition survey.

In this case study, we discuss how the project unfolded – and how we overcame various challenges.

The Client

The site was purchased by the client Available Car for redevelopment for their own use. As an old site from the 60s, there was most likely a lot of asbestos – and therefore before any demolition progressed, a survey was required.

The brief :

The brief was to complete a demolition asbestos survey across the whole site.

Locate and describe

As far as reasonably practical, we had to find all the asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) in the area.

Destructive inspection

As necessary, we gained access to all areas – including those that were difficult to reach

Asbestos removal specification

Following the survey, we produced an asbestos removal specification which the client used to procure the removal of the asbestos identified in the surveys. This included large-scale asbestos sprayed coating installations.

Challenges we overcame

Working in an operational environment

The results

We achieved a fully compliant asbestos demolition report for the client.

Adhere to asbestos control regulations when demolishing a building

When demolishing a building, you must ensure asbestos identification and removal is carried out in accordance with ‘Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012’. It not only protects the safety of the public, but it is the law.

Westland Environmental Safety has worked on various demolition projects to ensure the comprehensive identification of asbestos risks – so that contractors can be appointed to follow a clear asbestos removal specification.

Not only do we ensure all asbestos removal is strictly conducted in accordance with CAR 2012 and supported HSE guidance documents, but we ensure that we complete projects within our clients’ timescales and other demands.
